Houses in the Sawmill District were built in the 1800s, and in 1903, the original sawmill for American Lumber Company and its railroad spur were constructed. This company built a 110-acre campus on which they produced milled lumber, doors, and shingles. It was once the largest manufacturing company in the southwest. In 1958, Paxton Lumber Company opened its doors in the same area.
Eventually, as the businesses shuttered their doors, the lumberyard became derelict. In 2019, a transformation began on the former lumberyard, eventually turning it into a 34,000-square-foot food hall. Today, this space celebrates the city’s culinary diversity and serves as a vital piece of the redevelopment of this district.
