However, it was featured at several World’s Fairs in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. That gave flamenco a boost and more exposure to the world. In the 1950’s the Franco regime supported flamenco as a way to bring tourists to Spain and help its struggling economy.
Today flamenco is recognized by UNESCO as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is considered a complex and unique art form.

Tablao Flamenco show in Albuquerque
Tablao Flamenco Albuquerque delivers an unforgettable flamenco experience on Friday and Saturday evenings. Have a spectacular meal created by Hotel Albuquerque’s Chef Richard Padilla, followed by extraordinary flamenco performances by world-class artists. Attendees must be 21+; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The Sunday afternoon flamenco show also features premier dancers and musicians from the United States and Spain. No meal is included with the Sunday matinee, but fine wines and spirits are available.
Proceeds from the Tablao Flamenco performances support the National Institute of Flamenco to preserve and promote this unique art form.

National Institute of Flamenco in Albuquerque
The National Institute of Flamenco is located in the Sawmill District, just a short walk on the north side of Old Town.
The University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance offers the only dance program in the world with a flamenco concentration in a degree program.Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company is the dance company in residence at the University of New. On February 28, 2023, Yjastros became the first US-based company to perform at the Festival de Jerez in the history of any flamenco festival in Spain.
Established by director Eva Encinias in 1992, the Instituto Nacional de Flamenco (National Flamenco Institute, based in Alburquerque, New Mexico) is widely recognized as the epicenter of flamenco in the United States.
The mission of the National Institute of Flamenco is to protect and promote flamenco as an art form. It invites world-class dancers to perform, while also training a new generation of flamenco artists. Some of their groups perform at various venues in Albuquerque as well as around the United States.
Casa Flamenca
Casa Flamenca is mainly involved with conducting workshops and classes to teach, present, and preserve the art of flamenco. Just as piano students must perform at recitals to gain exposure and experience, the same is true of flamenco students.

Festival Flamenco in Albuquerque
Festival Flamenco is the largest and oldest flamenco festival outside of Spain! In 2023 Festival Flamenco Alburquerque (FFABQ) turns 36. We look forward to a thrilling 8-day event that showcases the power of flamenco and honors the legacy of this event.
Presented by the National Institute of Flamenco, in partnership with the University of New Mexico and the National Hispanic Cultural Center, FFABQ is the oldest and largest flamenco festival outside of Spain. Taking place from June 9-17, 2023, the Festival will include 23 performances, over 60 free and paid workshops, 12 internationally-based performance companies, 1 New Mexican company, and 114 total performers.
