about the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center

Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center is a non-profit organization that aims to preserve and protect the Rio Grande Bosque and educate the public about the region’s ecosystems. They achieve this goal by funding classes for over 12,000 school children each year, managing the nature shop, and supporting a number of ecological research projects. They also host a grand total of 130,000 park visitors annually with classes, guided walks, and other educational activities.

3 of the most fun things to do in the Rio Grande Nature Center

  1. Birdwatching

Throughout the year, the Rio Grande Nature Center is a prime spot for bird watchers. Over 250 species of birds call the park home, including roadrunners and wood ducks. During the summer, hummingbirds flock to the gardens to sip on the flowers’ sweet nectar. Sandhill cranes also populate the park near the river shores and ponds. Bring your binoculars, a notebook, and get ready for a full day of successful birding!

  1. Hiking

A trail system along the river allows visitors to easily access the park’s gardens, outdoor wildlife viewing areas, and more. Since the hike is only 1.2-miles, it’s a quick and easy journey that anyone can enjoy!

  1. Visitor Center

The Rio Grande Valley State Park in Albuquerque, NM also has its own visitor center! It’s a great spot to take a break from the heat or learn more information about the park and its wildlife.
