Flamenco in Albuquerque provides a truly unique experience. Albuquerque is the only place outside of Spain where you can enjoy this much flamenco. In fact, the National Institute of Flamenco is located in Albuquerque!
What started as the dance and music of gypsies in the southern areas of Andalusia and Murcia. It incorporates dance, singing, hand-clapping, guitar music, and finger-snapping and invites audience encouragement. Expect an electrifying and sensual performance with colorful regalia, powerful voices, passion and energy.
Flamenco has had ups and downs in cultural disapproval or acceptance in Spain. Initially it was disliked because it was a “vulgar dance” of gypsies. However, it was featured at several World’s Fairs in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. That gave flamenco a boost and more exposure to the world. In the 1950’s the Franco regime supported flamenco as a way to bring tourists to Spain and help its struggling economy.
Today flamenco is recognized by UNESCO as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is considered a complex and unique art form.
Indulge in flamenco in Albuquerque to acquaint yourself with this vibrant and unique experience.
