Traditional Mexican Christmas Punch

Ingredients
  

  • 9 cups water
  • 4 ounces cane sugar cone "peloncillo"
  • 1.5 cinnamon sticks
  • 12 ounces guavas, chopped
  • 2 ounces prunes, chopped
  • 12 ounces apples, chopped
  • 8 ounces pears, chopped
  • 2 ounces raisins
  • 1.5 sugar cane sticks, about 5 inches long, cut into 4 pieces each
  • 4 ounces tamarind pods, peeled
  • rum or tequila optional

Instructions
 

  • Place water in a large stockpot. Add the cane sugar cone and cinnamon sticks. Cook for about 15 minutes.
  • Add the chopped guavas, prunes, apples, pears, raisins, sugar cane pieces, and tamarind fruit.
  • Simmer for about 1 hour.
  • Serve hot in mugs. Ladle in some of the fruit if desired. Add rum or tequila if desired.
