A little background before you read this news story from 1881: The Exchange Hotel in Old Town was then owned by Thomas D. Post, the future father-in-law of Charles Bottger. During this time period, “wine room” was a euphemism for “brothel.”
“A shooting affray took place in the wine room east of the Exchange hotel [Old Town] last night. Two men had a quarrel over the mistress of the establishment and two shots were fired. Unfortunately, no one was hurt.” Albuquerque Daily Journal, June 8, 1881.
