everything you need to know about the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico
history of the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe
The origins of this beautiful chapel can be traced back to the mid-1800s, when the newly-appointed Bishop Lamy decided that Santa Fe was in need of an educational system to help spread the faith around the local area. The Sisters of Loretto wanted to be a part of this cause, so they sent seven sisters to make the long and difficult journey to Santa Fe to create the Academy of Our Lady of Light in the year 1853. As the school grew over the years, it became clear that it needed a chapel. The construction of the Loretto Chapel began in the year 1873 by two famed architects from Paris. Building materials like stone and stained glass were transported by wagon to contribute to this Gothic structure, which was completed in the year 1878. Today, this outstanding chapel serves as a private museum and wedding venue. The Loretto Chapel hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.
the Loretto Chapel staircase explained
One of the main features of this chapel is its mysterious staircase. This winding, helix-shaped staircase is so intriguing because it has no visible means of support. This mystery has drawn countless visitors throughout the years, as well as puzzled experts and reporters. It’s even been featured in movies and TV specials. However, this staircase does have hidden supports that were eventually discovered. Nevertheless, it’s still fun to visit this attraction and gaze up at this tall, spiral staircase that appears to stand on its own!
